Chipping Sparrow
Spizella passerina
Synopsis: Breeds widely east of the Cascades along woodland edges and in open woodland such as juniper. West of the Cascades, this species nests widely in open mixed and coniferous woods, but becomes more localized in the northern Willamette Valley, on the west slope of the Cascades, and in the Coast Range. It appears to be absent from the coastal slope north of Coos County. Most notable are the records from southwestern Harney and eastern Lake Counties.

Challenge: Determine if this species breeds more widely than shown in northeastern Malheur County, as well as more widely in the Columbia Basin (northern Sherman, Gilliam, Morrow, eastern Umatilla Counties).
